Ghosts of Cat Island

After I invited my Cajun friend and fellow arborist Bob Thibodeau to the Audubon Swamp Garden in Charleston, he returned the favor by taking me to the Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge, LA. Though usually inundated with 20 feet of the Mississippi, we were fortunate to find the swamp manageable that winter. We first visited the 17 foot diameter National Champion Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum). As we strolled through the fog ghosts started to take on the shape of towering cypress and gnomes began to form into knee-like roots. You’ll have to witness the metamorphosis for yourself (photos copyright Randy Cyr)!
